Whale Watching

If you are lucky to be in Los Cabos between January and April, be on the look out for migrating gray whales. Humpbacks and other species are also in the area. Whale watching tours are available, and with binoculars, you’ll see whales from shore, an incredibly thrilling sight. To get up close and personal with the whales, book a fly-in day trip to Magdalena Bay further up the peninsula, where the gray whales migrate to calve their young.

Come out and journey past the famous Land's End Arch in search of the mighty and beautiful Humpbacks and Gray Whales. Every year from December to April, the whales migrate south for the winter. The journey begins in the frigid waters of the Bering Seas. The whale spends the summer and a few fall months in the arctic waters before heading south. Around mid to late fall, the whales start their 5000 mile journey south to Baja California. Since whales travel close to the coast, many people enjoy going out on boats to view them, and that is exactly what we are going to do with you.
Whales head south for two reasons: shelter and breeding. The shallow lagoons of Baja California are perfect for a gray whale to have her calf. Another female gray whale, called an auntie, helps the mother when the calf is born. When the calf is born, it is about 15 feet long and weighs about 1,500 pounds. The mother whale's milk is 53% fat, which is 10 times richer than cow's milk. The calf needs this fat to build up blubber for the long trip north. The calf must get in shape before the long trip north. The calf swims against the current as water flows into the lagoon. This helps develop the calf's swimming muscles.
By the time the whales leave the lagoons the calf is about 19 feet long, and weighs about 3,000 pounds.

Whale Behavior

  • Spouting.-Is the visible exhaling by the whale of air, water vapor, and water drops. Sometimes called a blow.
  • Breaching.- Is when the whale leaps almost clear of the water and falls back with a splash.
  • Sounding.- When a whale sounds it will show it's flukes. The flukes are the whales tail.
  • Spyhopping.- Is the whale pushing itself vertically upward out of the water until it can see. A spyhop can last from 15 to 30 seconds.
