Hotels & Accommodation

Just up until more recent times, Cabo San Lucas was almost a well kept secret. Only a few hotels were up and running in the region. Now, more than 100 establishments are scattered along the corridor and the two towns – agreeing to all tastes and budgets.

peninsulacapas.jpgOptions for lodging in Los Cabos ranges greatly. Some folks even go so far as to purchase timeshare or fractional rooms and condos, etc. Others go with all-inclusive packages, or simply book direct.

Where in Los Cabos you choose to stay may depend on what you want to do and how. Some tourists opt for hotels situated right in the middle of it all in the heart of boisterous Cabo San Lucas – either on the marina, beaches or right downtown. San Jose del Cabo – more sleepy and tranquil than Cabo, where old town, traditional Mexico keeps it’s charm. Or, you can truly get away from it all and escape to the middle-of-nowhere resorts dotting the corridor that you never need to leave during your stay.

The Southern Baja Peninsula is virgin land—kind of like the last frontier. It is one of the least populated areas of the world. Los Cabos means “The Cape”—which refers to the southern tip of the Baja Peninsula. It is situated right below the Tropic of Cancer. (This is the same latitude as the Hawaiin Islands!)

Los Cabos contains the two main tourist destinations towns of San Jose del Cabo, and Cabo San Lucas. San Jose is the more traditional colonial Mexican town, but is evolving into a city of fine hotels, restaurants and nightclubs, and also has a new marina. Cabo San Lucas also has First Class hotels and restaurants, and is THE destination for nightlife, as well as much of the finest fishing and outdoor sports.

If you were to continue on Highway 1 and then go north of Cabos San Lucas on Highway 19, you would see majestic views of the Pacific Ocean and pass through the towns of El Pescadero, and the “magic town” of Todos Santos. Todos Santos is the home of the area’s artist community and has a number of good eating spots.

Continuing on you would pass San Pedro and eventually go all the way to the capital of Baja California Sur—La Paz. La Paz is known for its excellent shopping and a beautiful malecon along the city’s water edge. Some great spots for diving are in this area, as well. Taking Hiway 1 back south out of La Paz, you can then head toward the East Cape, passing through various ghost-mining towns. One of these, El Triunfo, is home to the amazing piano museum. You really should check it out.

You will notice that the geography is quite different from the Pacific side of the peninsula. Here you will experience high country, mountains, and canyons. Continuing on, you will hit the first town on the tranquil Sea of Cortez—Los Barriles (which means, “The Barrels”). This is a great spot to check out the calm waters of the East Cape. You can then go back inland and pass near towns such as Santiago and Miraflores, before completing your loop at the airport.

There is also a scenic coastal road that goes from La Rivera, down to a terrific diving spot at Cabo Pulmo National Park and continues along relatively deserted beaches to San Jose, however let me warn you, this 4x4 only road could shake your car into a bucket of bolts!!
