Money Matters
CURRENCY.- Mexico’s currency is the Mexican Peso. Although U.S. dollars are widely accepted, change is made in pesos. U.S. and Canadian coins are not legal tender in Mexico.
The exchange rate during 2005 has fluctuated between 10 and 11 pesos to $1 U.S. Most visitors find it easier and faster to exchange dollars at money exchange booths instead of banks.
We recommend you use money exchange kiosks or the American Express offices located in both towns. Bank lineups can be long, most banks have limited currency exchange hours, some do not exchange traveler’s checks, and English is not widely spoken.
For your convenience, our printable Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo maps show bank and ATM locations. Scroll down for a list of Los Cabos banks and their addresses.
CREDIT AND DEBIT CARDS. - MasterCard, Visa and American Express credit cards are widely accepted at major hotels and at many businesses and restaurants, but at smaller stores and out in the countryside, take along cash in small denominations.
Some bank debit and credit cards do not work in international destinations. Check with your bank before departing, you may need an International PIN.
